About the Project

I was selected by the Adobe Creative Residency Community Fund to work on an illustration in Adobe Fresco. I thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with the motion features and reference layers in Fresco.
This particular project was inspired by 'Minhwa', a Korean traditional painting style, and focused on the theme of Chaekgeori, exploring its various symbolizations.
Chaekgeori refers to a Korean still-life painting genre that gained popularity during the early Joseon Dynasty. These paintings were typically displayed in studios or schools, symbolizing a deep respect for scholarship and learning. In this painting, scholarly instruments are depicted alongside flowers, plants, food, unique imported artifacts, and religious implements.

Symbolism exists to adorn and enrich, not to create an artificial sense of profundity.” ― Stephen King

I really enjoyed adding motion to my artwork using Adobe Fresco. In particular, combining frame-by-frame and motion path techniques proved to be useful for animating butterflies with wings.

The reference layer was also beneficial in keeping the sketching/drawing outlines separate from the fill color. Additionally, I had the honor of participating as an invited artist at Urbanbreak 2022, Asia's largest urban and street art fair. There, I shared my experiences with Adobe Fresco while introducing my artwork.

Furthermore, one insight I gained from a UX designer's perspective is the business world's strong desire for creativity. Companies are eager to invest in creative, unique illustrations and media, rather than settling for generic stock images. This experience taught me that artists should also hone their business skills.
